Don't miss this cultural gem of MetroWest. As both an art museum and art school for adults, professionals, families, and children, The Danforth Museum of Art is dedicated to the celebration and creation of art. This is an accessible museum with a childrens' gallery with work hung at kids-eye level, a cozy reading room for kids, and an art collection of 3,500 hundred works, changing exhibitions by outstanding contemporary artists, and art sales. Teen docents engage children and family in art appreciation, the first weekend of the month, with adult tours by experts available throughout the year. The Museum is also available for functions including art-focused birthday parties. Established in 1975, the Museum is a non-profit, privately supported, public art museum whose primary purpose is to provide education in the visual arts for MetroWest through its collection of American art, exhibitions, Museum School and outreach programs in the community. As a long time partners with Framingham State College and the Framingham Public Schools, the Museum has received wide spread acclaim for educational programming and was recently named as Outstanding Cultural Organization for 2008 by the Education Collaborative, and Museum Educator Pat Walker has twice been named Art Educator of the Year by the Massachusetts Art Education Association. In 2006 Museum Director Katherine French received an award for curatorial excellence from the New England chapter of the International Association of Art Critics for work on the exhibition Joan Snyder: A Painting Survey, 1969-2005.
