The Custom House (1835) was designed and built by Robert Mills, renown architect of the Washington Monument. It is an excellent example of Classic Revival architecture and features two of Mills trademarks: the vaulted ceilings and cantilevered granite staircase. In its heyday, the Custom House was the hub of a thriving international port, channeling duty collection, foreign trade and commerce for the entire region. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the CHMM interprets the maritime heritage of the region including shipbuilding, trade, the Coast Guard, and much more.
