Description: The Gordon Library at WPI will host an exhibit of artworks by Christina P. O'Neill, complemented by historic newsclips and other memorabilia, documenting the city's last remaining working gas lights. The exhibit runs from August 26 to October 15 and a reception for the public will be held on Thursday, September 17 from 6 to 8 at the Library. The project is intended to raise awareness of old technology surrounded by new, to reaffirm the popular culture of the gas lights, and to showcase some of the unique city neighborhoods, including the Bancroft Hill neighborhood within walking distance of the WPI campus, which harbors the city's largest cluster of working gas lights dating from the late 19th and early 20th century.

Worcester artist and writer/editor Christina P. O'Neill created the watercolor paintings that make up the core of the exhibit. "I got motivated to paint the gas lights because they are an anachronistic but well-loved technology," she says. "They tend to knit together many of the neighborhoods in which they survive."
