Description: Clayscapes, Carol Mecagni's Westboro Gallery exhibit of platters and vessels, is a celebration of her new direction in forming vessels from clay.

After breaking her wrist and unable to continue with the strain and muscle action required of working in her usual style of throwing on the potters wheel, Ms. Mecagni started experimenting with other techniques for working with clay. By making coil, slab, and pinch pots and then draping, molding and pressing textural items into the surface of the wet clay, she was able to make platters of varying sizes and shapes. The resulting works represent an exciting new direction in technique, but like Ms. Mecagni's earlier work in ceramic they combine visual pleasure with usefulness.

Inspiration for her Clayscapes work is drawn from her observations of the natural world from the ever changing forest near her home to the long stretches of ocean beach she frequently walks. Clay shapes, surface decoration and glazes mimic what she sees in her "vertical landscapes." Ms. Mecagni says, In this new work, I am looking down into the organic growth and rich layering that you find in a multilayered pond or color filled piles of beach stones."

The show will run through August 3, 2009, at the Westboro Gallery, 8 W. Main St, Westboro. Open W 12-3, Th F Sat 11-5, Sun 11-2.
