Course Description:
Metal 101 is a great baseline for general shop use and a prerequisite for welding, well discuss material selection and identification, how to choose the right tools to cut and shape it, and safely and effectively finish parts. Along the way, well touch on keystone concepts of machine tools and their operation. This is a two-session class, comprised of 3-hour segments, the first being explanatory as well as hands-on, and the second to demonstrably put the skills to practical use and answer follow up questions.

Completing the course will provide the student with the skills and signoff needed for the proper use and care of the following tools: Abrasive Cut-off saw; Horizontal band saw; Drill press; Power drills; Angle Grinder; Bench Grinders
Session 1 will cover:
Formal training from the instructor who will demonstrate safe and successful usage of each tool, describe and demonstrate best practices, and inform the class of unsafe/undesirable outcomes. "Material selection/identification" "Ferrous vs nonferrous cutting tools" "Watch out for rotating bits" "What is a pinch point and how can it maim me?" Each student will have hands-on time with each tool under supervision.
Session 2 will cover:
Evaluation - students will be tested and checked off with supervision from the instructor -
Students have the option to stay later in order to participate in peer review. Learn how to pick the right saw for the job, how to drill holes, and how to grind the burrs down. A quick introduction to the staples of metalworking and the perfect warm-up to welding.
This class covers safety requirements, operation, and adjustment of the following tools:
CUT: - Abrasive saw - Horizontal band saw - Selecting a cutting tool - Safe work holding
DRILLING: - Drill press - Power drill - Understanding RPM - Selecting bits
GRIND: - How do I grind this? - Inside tubes? - Angle Grinder - Bench Grinders

Minimum Enrollment: 2 / Maximum Enrollment: 6
Requirements include:
Appropriate shop attire
Nonflammable clothing, esp cotton or natural fibers
Closed-toed shoes, boots preferred
Hair tied back, jewelry stowed
Earplugs recommended
There are no prerequisite classes for METAL 101 as this is the place to start!

HOW TO FIND US! Turn in at the Blue Hive parking lot (233 Stafford St.) drive to the back of the lot and turn right to go behind the building. There will be a large garage door. The entrance to the WorcShop is the door on the right with the blue awning.
