Description: This talk will describe barriers to effectively discerning truth from fiction and how one might begin to cultivate scientific thinking to effectively detect baloney. This will be discussed in the context of psychological science, including psychological interventions. For example, how to use scientific thinking to evaluate claims made by the article that hit your Facebook feed on the hot new therapy for anxiety. It is hoped that attendees will leave with an understanding of the importance of scientific thinking tools as safeguards against the strong pull of baloney.
