Description: These grass-like plants often go unnoticed, yet there are 200 species in New England alone, each related by a small but successful feature: a vase-shaped structure housing the flower ovary and achene (seed). You will learn a few of the most common species in both dry and moist habitats: Pennsylvania Sedge, Fox Sedge, Drooping Sedge, and others.
Classes meet 2 Sunday afternoons a month and together form a series that looks in-depth at segments of the plant portion of the natural world. Classes will be both indoors and outdoors using photos and specimens, with ample time to explore the sanctuary trails and put newly-gained practical knowledge to use. Joe Choiniere's outdoor knowledge is both broad and deep. His gentle, hands-on teaching style makes it enjoyable and easy to learn. This series is equally suitable for beginners as well as those who want to deepen their knowledge. Register for individual sessions, or monthly topic for a discount.
